Residents of a local retirement community in Bishop Cuthbert are said to be facing an uncertain future after learning the long-standing care services which have been provided at their complex are set to end.

Hartfields, a housing complex run by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT), has been a cornerstone for over 200 residents—mainly those aged 55 and older—providing both residential and in-home care services for nearly 16 years. The facility was designed to help older adults and those with disabilities maintain their independence, but recent developments have left residents worried about what lies ahead.

Reports indicate the JRHT has decided to announce its intentions to withdraw from delivering care services at the complex, with the decision sparking concerns amongst local residents, who fear being left in limbo as the search for a replacement provider begins.

A spokesperson for the JRHT confirmed that discussions are underway with Hartlepool Borough Council to identify an alternative care provider. Despite this reassurance, many residents are said to be apprehensive about whether a suitable replacement will step in to meet their needs.

Chris Simpson, Managing Director at JRHT, explained the rationale behind the decision, stating:

“JRHT takes immense pride in the care teams and services that have supported residents at Hartfields over the years. However, after a thorough review, we believe other care providers are better equipped to deliver the care services required, allowing JRHT to focus on its role as a landlord.”

He added that the changes would not take effect for at least six months and that residents and staff directly affected by the decision had been informed.

The care services at Hartfields have been praised by locals in the retirement complex where In July 2023, Care services provided at Hartfields by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust were rated as 'good' in all areas, according to inspection reports undertaken by the care quality commission....
