The fate of a once-iconic former hotel in Seaton Carew hangs in the balance once more, as its owners, Acland Homes Ltd, have put the property back on the market with an asking price of nearly £1 million.
Originally, the developers planned to demolish the historic 21-bedroom hotel and replace it with luxury apartments. However, feedback from the public as well as Hartlepool Borough Council suggested a strong preference for preserving the building, forcing a rethink of the plans.
Despite its storied past, its claimed the building holds no listed status which would offer it any legal protection from being demolished. Now marketed as a "development opportunity" by local estate agents Collier Estates, the property is being sold with a price tag of £950,000 & without any approved planning application for any future redevelopment, making speculation over the former hotels future 'varied'.....
Whilst some envision arose over the site being repurposed into 35 modern apartments, earlier consultations with the council highlighted a leaning towards the preserving at least part of the structure, which its claimed dates back to 1869. Concerns are mounting, however, as the building, now vacant for almost a year, risks becoming another eyesore in the town’s landscape.
Reports suggest that Acland Homes decided to sell on the former hotel development after key investors pulled out due to a change in circumstances.
For now, however, it seems the hotel’s future remains uncertain—whether it will be restored to its former glory or make way for new development lies in the hands of its next owner. What is clear, however, is that the local community wants to ensure the site avoids falling into further decline and ends up being yet another Odeon Cinema.
